PgMP Exam Tip 1

These tips are based on feedback provided by iKompass participants that have successfully passed the PgMP exam. Please bear in mind that each individual's experience will be unique and these tips are meant to be descriptive rather than prescriptive. I will keep adding more tips based on the usefulness of these to a larger group.

1. Lengthy questions

You are likely to come across wordy questions that span half the computer screen. A common mistake exam takers make is to speed read these questions to save time. Invariably, this leads to re reading the question over and over again. A better option would be to go through each statement once slowly and diligently. With each statement, make notes on the scrap paper to assimilate the given information. By the time you reach the last statement in the question, you should have a clear understanding of the context of the question. Now when you read the question statement, it should be clear as to what information is needed. Try this technique for this question below:

Company XYZ and Company ABC has agreed to merge their product lines and market the consolidated result. The companies have some products that have similar features and targeted at the same audience. In order to create a consolidated product catalog, a program effort has been initiated. Senior management at both the companies believe that a program manager could solve any issues of duplicate products, biases towards particular products, nepotism in choosing who stays and who has to go etc., All these expectations are informally communicated in merger meetings but not formally documented. John, the VP at ABC Company recommends that there has to be some effort spent in analyzing available information about organizational and business strategies, internal and external influences, and the benefits that both XYZ Inc and ABC Inc expect to realize. As a result of John’s recommendations, a strategic decision making body specific to the merger is created. The strategic body is also assigned with the responsibility to justify and prioritize initiatives which then serves to prepare the groundwork for initiating the program. The strategic body selects John to be the program manager for consolidating the product lines. At this stage of the program, John should expect what from the strategic body

  • A Mandate that contains the road map and assignment of the program manager.
  • A Business case that contains the road map and the realized benefits.
  • A Strategic directive that contains the high level cost, time and scope.
  • A Mandate that contains the strategic objectives and the benefits that the program is expected to deliver.

By reading the question carefully, it should be clear that pre-program preparations are taking place. During pre program preparations, the mandate is issued. A mandate is not the same as a program charter. The program manager uses information in the mandate to prepare a program charter. Answer choice A talks about program manager assignment and high level road map. These are part of the Initiate program process and hence wrong. Answer choice B is incorrect because the benefits are not realized yet. A strategic directive is unlikely to contain cost, scope and time related information. The correct answer choice here is D.

PgMP Exam Tip 2

Choosing one answer from multiple Correct Answers multiple

Questions that have multiple correct options tend to confuse the test taker and thereby taking up valuable time. Unlike many objective type exams wherein you can easily eliminate 1 or 2 answer options, here that may not be possible because all the answer choices are correct. This requires careful evaluation of the answer choices to look for a good justification to eliminate. Good idea to write down the reasons for why an answer choice may be incorrect. After you have got the reasons for eliminating each answer choice, you will be able to gauge the strength of the justification provided and then narrow down to your choice of answer.

During process of elimination, for each answer choice; look into the context provided in the question for hints. Here is an example:

Debra has taken over a Program that is into its 3 year with another 2 more years to completion. She is going through the program management plan and realizes that the program does not have any quality policies and guidelines and majority of the work is carried on through different component methodologies. Out of the 18 projects in the program, 6 of them have performance reports and statuses of the deliverables are clearly visible. Project Managers of these 6 projects have maintained the integrity of their baselines by following the plans throughout the lifecycle. These 6 projects also have received numerous commendations from customers for the quality of work and the deliverables. Some of the Project Managers from the remaining components inform Debra that it would be a good idea to replicate the successes of these projects across the remaining projects. Keeping in mind time is of essence, which of the following is the best course of action for Debra?

  • Apply the lessons from the successful projects to the remaining projects.
  • Create plans documenting how the program will be executed.
  • Document the reasons for why the 6 projects are relatively successful.
  • Identify and manage the interdependencies.

First round of Elimination

Why eliminate Answer Choice A:

Lessons from the successful projects may not be applicable to the other projects since we don’t know if all the projects are similar in nature.

Why eliminate Answer Choice B:

The question specifies that there is already a Program Management Plan so why another should be created.

Why eliminate Answer Choice C:

The 6 projects were performed according to plans so they must already have the lessons learned which includes successes and failures.

Why eliminate Answer Choice D:

Sounds too generic and all encompassing but this is what a Debra should be doing.

Second round of Elimination

Answer choice D sounds the most correct since it incorporates all the other options. Correct Answer is D
