Being certified by an independent, reputable organization like PMI (Project Management Institute) is a mark of quality and, in many cases, a competitive advantage.
The PgMP® exam has a significant number of situational questions. Answering these questions requires you to have run programs. Quite a number of these situations are real-life and you are likely to have come across them at some point in your program management career. Being able to distinguish between program management and project management is absolutely essential for the exam. The exam tests you on your knowledge of the role of a program manager within various organizational structures, primarily as that of someone who constantly has to make decisions between operations and projects and provide a link to the overall business. |

| “The PgMP exam has a significant number of situational questions. Many of the situations are discernable and you'd be able to answer them if you have run programs. Quite a number of these situations are real-life and you are likely to have come across them at some point. Irrespective of how you may have actually handled these situations, for the exam, questions need to be answered from program management standard perspective.
You are definitely expected to know the difference between projects and programs for the exam. A program manager also handles operations and constantly has to make decisions between operations and projects towards the overall benefit of the program.
Some of you may feel weary at some point during the exam. This is common if you have not taken any computer based exams in a decade. These questions need a lot of thought and require a constant state of alertness. Think of it like having to make 150 business decisions in 4 hours. When you start feeling weary, think about the benefits. The benefits of obtaining the credential outweigh the effort that goes to pass the exam.
With the required expected experience in Projects and in Programs, you are likely to have imbibed a lot of skills and knowledge in organizational project management. The exam tests you on this. You need to correlate the concepts in the program management standard to the skills and knowledge gained through your work experience.
The Program Management Standard is a very interesting and engaging book when you start relating it to your work. This is the first material that you need to obtain. After going through the book, you can devise a strategy for obtaining the credential.
Wishing you all the best. Remember, as with any decision we make as program managers, there is always learning from the outcome, whether the outcome is positive or negative.” - iKompass PgMP® Instructor |
